Beginning Knitter

Finished size: 21" head circumference

Materials: 2 balls Equinox Stripe (100 grams/66 yds); US 13 (9mm) 16" circular needle and US 13 double point needles or US 13 single point needles if knitting rows; model knit in color 106.

Gauge: 2.75 sts = 1" over rib pattern slightly stretched on US 13 needle or size to get gauge

Note: Instruction is given first for rnds followed by instruction for rows

Instruction (rnds):
With US 13 circular needle cast on 56 sts. Place marker and join being careful not to twist sts.
Work in K2, P2 rib for 8.75" to 9" from beg edge.
Next rnd (RS) (dec): *K2, p2, k2. P2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. (49 sts)
Next rnd (WS): *K2, p2, k2, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Next rnd (dec): *K2, p2tog, k2, p1; rep from * to end of rnd. (42 sts)
Next rnd: *K2, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Next rnd (dec): *K1, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd. (28 sts)
Place 7 sts on each of four double point needles.
Next rnd (dec): K2tog to end of rnd. (14 sts)
Cut yarn leaving an 8" tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull tightly. Weave tail in on WS.

Instruction (rows):
With US 13 needles cast on 56 sts.
Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2; rep from * to end or row.
Row 2 (WS): K the knit sts and p the purl sts
Rep row 2 for rib pattern for 8.75" to 9" from beg edge.
Next row (RS) (dec): *K2, p2, k2, p2tog; rep from * to end of row. (49 sts)
Next row (WS): *K1, p2, k2, p2; rep from * to end of row.
Next row (dec): *K2, p2tog, k2, p1; rep from * to end of row. (42 sts)
Next row: *K1, p2; rep from * to end or row.
Next row (dec): *K1, k2tog; rep from * to end of row. (28 sts)
Next row (dec): P2tog to end of row. (14 sts)
Cut yarn leaving an 8" tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull tightly. Weave tail in on WS.

Earflap (make 2)
With US 13 needle (use circular needle the same as you would use a single point needle) cast on 10 sts and work 4 rows in garter stitch (knit every st and every row).
Next row (dec): Ssk, k6, k2tog. (8 sts)
Next 2 rows: Knit
Next row (dec): Ssk, k4, k2tog. (6 sts)
Next 2 rows: Knit
Next row (dec): Ssk, k2, k2tog. (4 sts)
Next 2 rows: Knit
Next row (dec): K1, k2tog, k1. (3 sts)
Next row (dec): K1, K2tog. (2 sts)
Next row (dec): Ssk.
Cut yarn and pull through the last st.

Finishing:
If the hat is knit as rows, then sew the back seam, reversing the seam 3.5" from bottom edge.
Fold the bottom edge up 3.5" for the brim. Sew the earflaps to the fold line.
Make 2 braids as follows:
Cut 3 lengths of yarn, each approx. 12" long. Knot lenghts tog at one end and braid for approx. 10", then knot. Sew braids to bottom of earflaps. Trim ends.
Make a pompom or use a faux fur pompom as shown on the model.
